Henry:Well,soup is an integral part of Korean cuisine. Soup is usually served as part of the main meal along with rice and other banchan which comprise of side dishes.

Daniel:Ah……it sounds a bit different from the western soup. In western countries,it is served as an appetizer.

Henry:Oh,yeah. Most Korean soup can be classified into two primary groups,guk and tang.The former is watery and served at homes while the tangs are available at the commercial eateries.Meat,shellfish and vegetables are the usual ingredients of the Korean soups.

Daniel:You must know a lot of Korean soup recipes.

Henry:I know a few,such as gomguk,naengguk,malgeunguk, tojangguk……

Daniel:Wow,you are great.

Henry:Thank you.

Korean seaweed soup is a definitely healthy and delicious way to incorporate seaweed into your diet. Traditionally,Koreans would serve this on birthdays and after giving birth.They say that the seaweed helps the new mother to heal.

It is a long tradition in Korea that new mothers eat seaweed soup for certain period of time after childbirth since this soup would bring them strength. Seaweed soup has about 40 kinds of minerals,DHA,vitamins,iodine and other nutrients.It has 200 times more calcium than rice,25 times more than spinach and 13 times more than milk.Seaweed soup is known tobe special food for new mothers who are recovering from the loss of blood during childbirth by providing healthy doses of all the nutrients.
