如:“John, are you doing anything on Sunday evening?”(约翰,你星期日晚上有特别的事要做吗?)或许约翰会这样回答:“No,I,don t think so.Why?”(我想没有,有什么事吗?)这样你就可很快地回答说“Well,I was wondering if you d like to come around for dinner.”(哦,我是在想你愿不愿意来我这里吃晚餐?)

如果是比较熟悉的朋友、同学、邻居,就可直截了当地提出邀请,如:“How about going to the movies with me?”(和我一起看电影如何?),如对方愿意,会欣然接受:“Yes,I d love to.”(可以,我愿意去。)如有事或不便,也会直言告诉你:“Sorry,I can t.I ve already had plans for tonight.”(对不起,不能去。

Arranging a Meeting

Let s...

Let s get the meeting under way.

Let s get down to business.

Will you...? 你来……

Will you take the floor please?

Will you take care for that?

Could you have your...?

Those against,put up your hands.

Talking about Quantity

A:How many do you intend to order for our shirts?

A:We are not interested in small orders.I suggest you order at least 2,000 dozen.

B:No problem. We want a minimum of 1,000 dozen of men s shirts and a minimum of 3,000 dozen of embroidered shirts. Can you guarantee continuous production and adequate supply?

Talking about Payment Terms

A:Let s start out to discuss the question of payment terms.

B:I suppose you know very well that we require irrevocable letters of credit payable against presentation of shipping documents.

A:I fully understand your position. An irrevocable letter of credit ensures that the seller gets paid in time. But,on the other hand it would add to the buying costs. We ve been, after all, trading partners for 3years and you know us well. Can t you give us D/A or D/P?

B:I m afraid it has been our practice so far to insist on payment by L/C.

A:But on our part, our government is reluctant to approve of L/C payment for our imports. And there is the licensing problem.

B:I understand that.Still,I m not in a position to help you.Maybe we could do something later when we have had more and larger deals together.

A basic fact of American culture: Driving is a way of life. It s not that there s no public transportation in America. Many cities have taxis, buses and subways to help commuters get to and from work. Some large universities even have buses to take students to classes across campus. But most people find it much more convenient to drive, even if they do have to deal with traffic. Nowadays busy families often have more than one vehicle. Many people view their car as a status symbol. But no matter their social status, people without wheels feel tied down. For teenagers, being able to drive—and in some case, have their own car—is a big deal. It gives them a sense of power and freedom. Many young Americans consider a driver s license a right, not a privilege. It s rare to find an American teenager without one.
