Freed death row man Glenn Ford'lost 30 years'

12/03/2014

I'm Fredrick Dolf with highlights from across BBCWorld Service news today.

And next to the United States where when Glenn Ford was sent to prison for a murder he did not com-mit, Ronald Regan was president. Last month, Mr. Ford walked out of Louisiana's notorious Angola prison a free man exonerated after 30 years on death roll. He may eventual receive substantial compensations for wrongful imprisonment. But on leaving jail at the age of 64,Glenn Ford was confronted with a challenge of having to build a new life with just the clothes he was wearing and a debit card with a balance of 20 dollars on it. He has since found somewhere to live and created an online list, appealing for some basic necessities. With one of his lawyers Aron Nova standing beside him, Glenn Ford has been speaking to Julian Marshal.

First, what's life been like since being released?

Now my stomach is kind of messed up from there, from eating prison food for so long.

So what kind of food are you able to eat now?

Mainly fruits and medicine juices. Anything else cause me to be nauseated.

So that's your body adapting to the outside world. But how are you kind of coping with whathave been enormous sort of changes in the world since you were originally sent to prison?

Internet, cellular phones, computer's period is baffling to me.

What about the way people react to you?

Just be amazing to me. There are so many people of different nationalities who recognize me and show concern, compassion.

So you have been getting a lot of sympathy, but have you been getting a lot of material support, as well?

Yes, from the Internet wish list. I get clothes. I get a telephone.

I mean when you were released from prison as I understand, that you only had 20 dollars and 4 cents. Is that right?

Yeah, that's correct.

And have you got any more money since then? No.

Aron Nova, though, it is possible, isn't it that over a period of time that Glenn might get more money?

It's possible. I may say it can be a long and difficult process. There is a compensation statute in the Louisiana, but that can take many years to ac-complish.

I mean, what is the basic compen-sation that Glenn would be entitled to?

The maximum compensation that he can possibly receive is 330,000 dollars.
