第30章

'My grandfather was a great friend of his. So our families have known each other for three generations. And those of us of my generation have always remembered him as being singularly the most important man in Hong Kong in the sense that he provided us with endless films and, of course, the great television station the Pearl Channel which remains today the most popular channel in Hong Kong. And the Kongfu films, for example, were all made at the Shaw's studios. He really was an icon of my generation.'

'So he found the ingredients for popular culture in TV and film. But how did he retain his dominant position?'

'He came from Ningbo which all the cleverest Chinese mainlanders came from. And he was very assertive. He was an artist himself. I think he made the first Chinese talk movie as early as the late thirties. So he had a passion. And when he started making all his movies, people were not entrepreneurial as he was. And he simply managed to pick all the actors and all the right people. And he had acute business sense so that he never ran out of budget, although he famously turned down Bruce Lee. Well, you know, nobody is perfect. He got that one wrong. But nonetheless, my point is that notwithstanding his missing Bruce Lee, he still maintained the dominant position. And that proves how clever he was.'

The advantages of getting old

14/01/2014

And other benefits to grow older:one interviewee tells us that life can get better for people who are over 60.

'They find life a lot less stressful if they had good family relationships, they adore their grandchildren. And generally speaking, they are enjoying life to the full.'

Emma Soames is the editor of Saga-a British magazine aimed at the over fifties.

'I think a lot of people are happier in their older age than they were, say, in their forties and fifties. They find life a lot less stressful if they had good family relationships, they adore their grandchildren. And generally speaking, they are enjoying life to the full. I think on the whole women find it harder than men and probably film stars find it harder than anybody. It must be terrible for them.'

'So you tell us what are some of the advantages of getting old we lose sight of when we are thinking actually we could ignore old people which is, what seems to be the culture in many societies, particularly western societies.'

'But if you only define yourself by what you look like, then you are setting yourself up for grave disappointment. Basically, people in their 60s, they are having a pretty wonderful time.'

'Do you think that we in the west have some things to learn from eastern cultures who tend to have a very differ-ent view of the way which they regard older people in their societies?'

'Most definitely, I think the respect for older people that you find in some cultures would greatly benefit our western societies.'
