Voice of movie trailers Hal Douglas died aged 89

14/03/2014

Hal Douglas, perhaps the last of great Hollywood voiceover men has died at the age of 89. For decades, Hal Douglas provided the deep gra-velly tones for movie trailers for Man in Black, Bridget Jones'Diary and hundreds of other films. Here is our arts correspondent Vincent Dowd'Hal Douglas along with the late Don LaFontaine was joint king of the Hollywood movie voiceover. For decades, he made a very good living from trailers which he admitted he immediate forgot about until the check turned up. And there is some disagreement whether it was Douglas or LaFontaine who died in 2008 who introduced the cliché'In a world where'which became an industry in-joke. Douglas seldom needed to go anywhere near Hollywood. He lived in Virginia and delivered his performances down the line. Fashions have changed and today few trailers feature a narrative voice at all. Hal Douglas who started as an actor and radio announcer said his voice was the right pitch to cut through with the noisiest material. And he said for maximum gravel, the big trick was never to clear the throat before a recording section. I'll bear that in mind. Vincent Dowd on how Douglas has died aged 89.

3000-year-old giant virus'come back to life'

04/03/2014

Could climate change unleash deadly viruses that have lain dormant for thousands of years. It's possible according to a group of French scientists who have for the first time revived an ancient virus that have been buried in Siberian permafrost for 30,000 years. Fortunately, the one they found wasn't deadly to humans but it did cause some nasty damage to an amoebathey tested on. Our science reporter Rebecca Morelle spoke about the findings.'It's an absolutely incredible piece of research. So the viruses found varied about 30 meters down in the Siberian permafrost. And it's been lying there dormant, not doing anything for the last 30,000 years. But it was taken out and it sprung back to life, which is pretty incredible and the first time that a virus this old has actually been revived. It's also quite a weird virus, too. It's very big in size. You can actually see it under a microscope, which is really unusual for a virus and it's the biggest scientists have found so old and revived.''And it's under control or not?''Yes. So the good news is this doesn't actually affect humans or animals. But scientists all worried that there could be more deadly viruses lurking down there in the deep place at the permafrost, small pox for example. That was around thousands of years ago. It's eradicated now on the surface, but there is a chance if those deep places were penetrated.'
