第18章

You can linger for as long as you like in the Ziferblat coffee shop. You'll be given a clock when you come in to keep time.

When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill.

The cost of hanging out, eating, working and meeting new people in the place is 3p per minute or ā1.80 an hour. The shop's owner, Ivan Meetin, says:'Everything is free, except the time you spend there.'

Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat on the premises while accessing the internet through wi-fi. Meetin's customers clearly are not the types who rush to work with a paper cup to drink from at their desks. They are there for the ambience. The new coffee shop's atmosphere is relaxed and a bit bohemian. Informality is at the heart of Meetin's concept. He's always loved the idea of building his own house.'With my mates, we were building treehouses where rules of society didn't exist,'he says.

Meetin believes his coffee shop is a bit like'social media',but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialise. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes.

The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Ziferblat is part of a Russian chain. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea.

I'd like to try it at least once. Who knows-I might even start writing my own novel. If coffees hops are good enough for JK Rowling to spend quality time in, why can't I?

Women workers with children are pushed aside for flexible working time

09/04/2014

Are flexible working arrangements for women with children causing resent-ment among those who don't have children?Researchers here in Britain have found that many of those survey thought women who worked flexible hours were less committed than their colleagues.

'Working part-time, leaving early to pick up the kids:flexible working is seen as something that can help parents, but it could be having a negative impact. 25,000 women were surveyed. About half of those questioned said that women who worked flexible hours were resented and viewed as less committed by their colleagues. Here is what some people I asked in London thought.'

'There is some resentment defi-nitely. I think it's more a case of like with younger people in their 20s. You know, they do kind of look at some of my older colleagues and sort of saying'well, it's not really that fair.'But I think they might change their tune when they are perhaps in their 30s and when they are thinking about kids.'My colleague, when I was leaving so much part-time, mouthed'I hate you'when I was leaving. And I think that was because I, you know, I do manage to strike a balance.''I passed from 95 jobs, full-time to freelance.''And so it's not just women with children that want that flexibility?''No, I don't think so.'Jody Day, she founded the organization Gateway Women for women without children said they had legitimate reasons to be resentful.'It's a difficult issue to bring up in the workplace because it's actually about fairness and equality, and diversity. And if most of the women in the office do have children, there is a sense that's a kind of dominant sort of group think. And it can be quite difficult to get your voice heard if you are the childless one in that situation.'

'Managers are often confused about what rights and privileges people have because they are trying to do the right thing. They are worried about what the law says.'The researchers found that the stigma attached to flexible working could be an obstacle to women's progression. They've called on businesses to do more to change that.
