And I will pledge with mine；
Or leave a kiss but in the cup，
And I’ll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine；
But might I of Jove’s nectar sup，

I sent thee late a rosy wreath，
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it a hope，that there
It could not wither’d be.
But thou thereon didst only breathe，
And sent’st it back to me；
Since when it grows，and smells，I swear，
Not of itself，but thee.

背景知识
本·琼森（Ben Jonson），英国文艺复兴时期重要的剧作家、诗人和评论家。1572年6月11日生于伦敦。主要诗集有《格言诗》、《森林集》、《灌木集》等。他曾就学于古代史学者坎姆登，并在其资助下到威斯敏斯特学校读书，获得关于希腊、罗马文学的丰富知识。后来，他博览群书，成为当时学识最渊博的剧作家之一。
这首诗中，热恋中的情郎手端美酒，眼睛却在寻找与情人沟通的机会。玫瑰花冠是爱情的象征，但情郎此举不只是为了取悦情人或纯粹地表达爱意，而是为了让玫瑰花接受情人的亲吻后得以“永不凋残”，并且就如同情人的气息般永远地保留在自己的记忆中！真可谓情之深，爱之切。诗人对情郎的心理描写得细致入微，字里行间流露出真挚情意。
