stare 指出于惊奇或愤怒, 或受到侮辱后的凝视, 或神经衰弱的盯视。with an empty stare 茫然凝视地;with a stare of horror 带着惊恐的凝视(眼神);with a stare of astonishment 带着惊愕的眼神;give sb. an angry stare 愤怒地盯某人一眼。

gaze 指聚精会神的凝视。

gaze at a picture on the wall 对墙壁上的画聚精会神地凝视;

gaze into the sky 对天空的凝视;the gaze of people 人们的注意。

gape 指张口呆视。

His stupid ga pe made people laugh heartedly.

他傻乎乎的眼神引得大家开心大笑。

10. The person who insistently fixes his eyes on our faces is often more successful in arousing our dislike than impressing us with his directness and sincerity. 某人把目光集中在我们脸上, 多半不会给我们留下直率、坦诚的印象, 反而惹我们反感。

1 )fix.on (upon).把..集中在..

Thousand of eyes a re fixed on the Tian An Men rostrum.

千万双眼睛仰望着天安门城楼。

We fixed our attention on (upon)the exhibited new machines.

展出的新机器把我们吸引住了。

The painter is fixing his eyes on (upon)a painting.

2 )be successful in (doing)sth. 在..成功;成功地..

They a re successful in fulfilling the plan ahead of time.

他们成功地提前完成了计划。

She is successful in quite a few aspects.

在好几方面她都是成功的。

3 )more.than.作“ 与其说..不如说..”解释。在这里, 比较级只能用more + 形容词(副词)的形式, 即不能用-er 形式, 这种用法也适用于less.than.结构。例如:

He was less hurt tha n frightened.

与其说他受了伤害, 不如说他被吓住了。

= He was more frightened than hurt.

上述结构用于表示“ 与其说.. 不如说.. ”解释时, 可以连接除形容词或副词以外的其他词语。例如:

The present crisis in capitalist countries is much more a political tha n an economic crisis. 资本主义国家目前的危机与其说是经济危机, 还不如说是一场政治危机。

11. In other animals, bared teeth are a warning gesture, a danger ign.

对于除了人以外的动物来说, 露齿表示警告, 是一种危险的信号。

bared 是过去分词作定语, 修饰teeth, 意为“ 暴露的”、“ 露出的”, 此处bare 是及物动词, 表示“ 露出”、“ 暴露”。

ba re one’s thoughts 暴露思想;bea r one’s heart 讲心里话;ba re the end of a wire 剥开电线头The dog bared its fangs. 狗露出獠牙。

The men bared their heads. 男人都脱下帽子(露出了头)。

12. Sometimes when we feel that a person is“warm”or“ friendly”, it is possible we are reacting to a form of non-verbal communication-his opened pupils. 有时我们觉得某人“ 热情”“ 友好”, 有可能是我们从一种非言语交际的方式得出了上述印象, 这个方式就是他的瞳孔扩大了。

1 )it 是形式主语, 真正的主语是we are reacting. his opened pupils。

2 )react to.对..起反应

The eye reacts to light. 眼睛对光起反应。

The audience reacted to his speech readily.

听众对他的演说立即起了反应。

3 )opened 张开的, 是过去分词作定语修饰pupils。open 是及物动词, 意为“ 张开”,“ 展开”,“ 打开”。

Open the window! 开窗!

Open your eyes! 张大眼睛。

Open your book at page ten. 把书翻到十页。

13. You may find that this silent language is much more fascinating than the actual conversation going around you. 你会发现这种无声语言比周围的有声交谈更为有趣。

1 )fascinating adj. 迷人的, 消魂落魄的Natural scenery is very fa scinating. 自然风景十分迷人。The scenes in Emei Mountain is fa scina ting. 峨嵋山的风景迷人。

2 )going around you 是现在分词短语表示“ 正在你周围发生的”, 作定语修饰conversation。

3 )around prep. 在..周围, 环绕着The earth moves around the sun. 地球绕着太阳转。Unite a round the Central Committee of the Party. 团结在党中央周围。
