The name of the company, whose founding date is 1846, marks it out as one of the oldest purveyors of luxury leather goods in the world.

Spain, especially Madrid, the stately yet lively capital, is deep in Loewes soul. Spain is perhaps unique in Europe in that it is still what it was: for while resolutely international and innovative with its chefs, architects and Oscar-winning movie stars. The countrys authenticity remains intense and alive.

Madrid is a city for people who dare, thus our story begins with an émigré called Enrique Loewe Roessberg who had travelled more than a thousand miles from his native Germany to found the company that bears his name.

Spanish sensuality is everywhere at Loewe where the leather is so soft, you have to reach out and touch it. For Spaniards, luxury IS Loewe, whether we are talking about heirlooms passed through generations; an iconic Amazona bag that has remained contemporary for over quarter of a century passed from mother to daughter; or leather and suede clothing which gets better, in the more it is worn.

In 1846, Madrid was a-buzz with wedding fever as the city prepared for the royal marriages of the Borbón Queen, Isabel II and her sister, the Infanta María Luisa Fernanda. In a narrow back street, a group of leather artisans struggled to meet demand for tobacco pouches, coin purses, boxes, bags and cigar cases. In 1872, Enrique Loewe Roessberg forged his expertise in leather with that of these local craftsmen, with such success that by the 1890s, aristocrats were finding their way to another small street, calle del Príncipe, and the first shop to bear the Loewe name above the door. Inside, everything is made-to-order, custom-created to the whims of the ladies and gentleman of the court.

1.1905 it was royal wedding fever all over again. The new King and Queen, Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia - the niece of Britains Queen Victoria , granted Loewe the honour of the official title of “Supplier to the Royal Court”. For ladies, a handbag in iguana, crocodile or snake from the firm, now helmed by the founders son, Enrique Loewe Hilton, has become the ultimate symbol of elegance and refinement.

Having already treated himself to a custom-designed leather jerkin to wear while watching the bullfights, the macho American writer, Ernest Hemingway, took his friend Ava Gardner shopping at Loewe. She chose a chocolate brown crocodile handbag. The screen goddess is just one of a long list of Hollywood stars flocking to the Gran Vía store (and for cocktails at the nearby bar, Chicote). During the era when epic movies including “El Cid”“55 Days in Peking” and “Doctor Zhivago” brought the biggest stars to town, Deborah Kerr, Charlton Heston, Cary Grant, James Stewart as well as Margot Fonteyn and Maria Callas signed the stores guest book.

The 1950s, 60s and 70s saw Loewes retail expansion across Spain to Bilbao, Valencia, Palma de Majorca, Seville, San Sebastián, Granada, Córdoba, Las Palmas and Tenerife. In 1959, a further store opened on Madrids calle Serrano featuring architect, Javier Carvajals radically modern interiors in a sparse Scandinavian style.
