23. Chinatown:Chinese City in America 美国也有中国城——唐人街

Back in the mid-1800s, the Chinese immigrants overseas, suffered the hardships of migration and hard development, the Chinese culture spread far and wide to the world, including a distant piece of the continent across the Atlantic in the United States.
Throughout the United States cities, from San Francisco to New York, from Los Angeles to Hawaii, almost have all over the Chinese community, and have sort of a small piece of“Chinatown”.
“Chinatown” is “the living fossil of the history of Chinese struggle in North America during the century”. The first Chinese came to America across the oceans, in order to pursue a better life, but they suffered the ruthless exclusion from the local community.
Later, in the efforts of generations of Chinese, the Chinese position has gradually been recognized, gradually bustling Chinatown. There are traditional buildings, the taste of home, familiar with the temperament, friendly faces. These can comfort the hearts of Chinese people wandering, care of their deep cultural imprint of bone marrow.
Today’s Chinatown is the foothold of the Chinese overseas, is the starting point for the Chinese to achieve gorgeous dream, is their own window to show the Chinese culture to the world.
早在19世纪中期,越江过海的华人移民,经历着充满磨难的迁徙和艰苦的开拓,把中华文化远播到世界各地,包括美国这块大洋彼岸的遥远的大陆。

“唐人街”是“华人北美百年奋斗史的活化石”。华人先辈们漂洋过海来到美国,为的是追求美好的生活,可是他们遭到了当地社会的无情排斥。
后来,在一代又一代华人的努力下,华人的地位也慢慢得到了承认,唐人街也逐渐繁华。这里有传统的建筑、家乡的味道、熟悉的音律、亲切的面孔,这些都能慰藉华人们漂泊的心灵,呵护他们深入骨髓的文化烙印。
如今的唐人街,是华人在海外的落脚点,是华人实现华丽梦想的起点,是华人向世界展示自己文化的窗口。
The Greatest San Francisco Chinatown 最大的旧金山唐人街
The largest Chinatown of America is in San Francisco. This is the first Chinese to set foot on the land. Early Chinese emigrated to the U.S., often inspired by a myth that the gold were all over the land in the western of United States, so the Chinese translated to “San Francisco” into “Gold Mountain”, and later people found a new gold mine in the Australian, “Gold Mountain” turned into “Old Gold Mountain”.
San Francisco’s Chinatown began in 1850. The Chinese laborers for development of the west coast of the United States came here. The life was different, with no common words. They lived together, in solidarity, in a familiar accent, they looking for the warmth of home.
They opened small tea houses, small restaurants, curb Plazas, laundries, etc., and gradually formed the Chinese laborers living area. More and more locals fell in love with Chinese food here, called here as China Town. Later, the place became a bustling street, schools and the cinema also was run, has become full of the special characteristics of Chinese ethnic neighborhoods, retaining all the traditional Chinese customs.
The main road of Chinatown is Grant Avenue, everywhere are the signs and guidepost in Chinese and English, the annual Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year celebration event were held here.
美国最大的“唐人街”在旧金山,这是华人最早踏上的土地。华人早期移民美国,往往被一个神话鼓舞着,那就是在美国西部这块土地上遍布金矿,所以华人把“圣弗朗西斯科”翻译成“金山”,而后来传说在澳洲发现了新的金矿,又将金山改成“旧金山”。
旧金山的“唐人街”始于1850年前后。当年开发美国西海岸的华工来到这里,人生地不熟,言语又不通,于是住在一起,团结互助,在熟悉的乡音中寻找家的温暖。
他们开设了小茶馆、小饭铺、豆腐坊、洗衣店等,逐渐形成了华工生活区。越来越多的当地人爱上了这里的中国饭菜,称这里为“中国城”。后来,这里成了繁华的街道,还办起了学校和电影院等,成了富有中国民族特色的特殊街区,保留着中国传统的种种风俗。
中国城的主要干道是格兰特大道,这里到处都是中英文对照的招牌和路牌,每年的中国新年和中秋节庆盛会都在这里举行。

New York’s Chinatown is on the southern tip of Manhattan in New York City, with its center of Mott Street, including Canal Street, Bayer Street, Disclosure Street, Rafi Ye Te Street, Bowery and East Broadway.
It has a pivotal statue in New York, because it is near the municipal government, close by Wall Street, the world-famous international financial center, and adjacent to Broadway, the world Performing Arts Center .
