The University of Bern (German： Universit.t Bern) is a university in the Swiss capital of Bern and was founded in 1834. The roots of the University of Bern go back to the sixteenth century. As part of its reorganization of higher education， the Bern government transformed the existing theological college into an academy with four faculties in 1805. The liberals gained control of the Canton of Bern in 1831 and in 1834 turned the academy into a university. In 1903， a new Main Building was inaugurated on the Grosse Schanze and the number of faculties increased. Up to the end of the Second World War， the University went through a period of quiet expansion.Its position in the economic and cultural life was widely appreciated. Nowadays， the University of Bern offers top quality education across the board： it enjoys special recognition in leading-edge disciplines， is reputed for the excellent quality of its teaching， offers a delightful setting， and a campus environment intimately linked to the social， economic and political life of the city. The University is also actively involved in a wide range of European and worldwide research projects， notably in the field of Space Research and Dental Medicine.
System： The University of Bern has eight faculties： Faculty of Theology； Faculty of Law； Faculty of Business， Economics and Social Sciences； Faculty of Medicine (cardiac surgery， neurosurgery， pathology and microbiology)； Faculty of Veterinary； Faculty of Humanities (offers majors in the three areas of art and culture， archaeology and history， and languages and literature)； Faculty of Human Sciences (offers study pro-grammes in education， sports and psychology)； Faculty of Science(fo-cuses on the natural and life sciences).
City show： The city of Bern is the capital of Switzerland and is the fifth most populous city. In 1983 the historic old town in the centre of Bern became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perhaps its most famous sight is the Time Bell， an elaborate medieval clock tower with moving puppets. It also has an impressive 15th century Gothic cathedral， the Münster， and a 15th-century town hall. Within the Old Town， there are eleven 16th century fountains， most attributed to Hans Gieng， that are on the list. Bern has also one of the longest covered shopping promenades in the world， which invite you to do shopping， or dining out. There are so many landmarks， cafés， restaurants， theatres， museums， and shops. When you are visiting， there is no need for using a car， as everything is close on foot starting from the train station.
