Unlikely Champions
Anonymous
There was no hiding it. We didn’t like to admit it but it was true. Our hockey team was thought to be the worst team in the league.
No matter how hard we tried, we just couldn’t seem to win a game. My team battled throughout the whole season losing to every team we played.
At first we hoped that we could turn it around but as defeat after defeat came in, my teammates and I became depressed. After that, we felt useless and hopeless.
Everyone on the team was down on himself for being a loser. There were only six games left in the season. If we wanted to make it to the playoffs, we would have to win all six. It seemed like an impossible task.
How could a bunch of nonstop losers suddenly become nonstop winners? The coach had a quiet talk with us. He told us that he believed in us. We laughed.
He told us that he honestly believed that we were a good team. We snickered. Undaunted, he told us again that he believed we were a good team. We started to listen. The coach told us the bottom line. If we wanted to show everyone that we were a good team we had to make it to the playoffs.
Something he said that night must have sunk in. For the next six games, my team battled hard. We won every single game and we made it to the playoffs.
We knew if we could do that, we had a chance of going all the way to the top. We made two huge upsets in the playoffs. Everyone was flabbergasted.
We were the comeback story of the year. Now we had made it all the way to the League Championship. We would be playing against the top team. They were undefeated and had beaten us before 12-0.
Some of our old thoughts started to come back. It’s useless. We’ll never make it. What if we can’t do it?
Before the game our coach got us motivated just like before. He prepared us well for the biggest game of our lives. We came out and played with heart.
We were determined to win and we did! We won 3-2 in overtime and shocked the whole league.
We had pulled off a huge upset and won the 2003-2004 League Championship with heart, hard work, and a coach who never let us lose sight of our dream.
