Invention

Billy Collins

Tonight the moon is a cracker,

with a bite out of it

floating in the night.

and in a week or so

according to the calendar

it will probably look

like a silver football,

and nine,maybe ten days ago

it reminded me of a thin bright claw.

But eventually—

by the end of the month,

I reckon—

it will waste away

to nothing,

nothing but stars in the sky,

and I will have a few nights

to myself,

a little time to rest my jittery pen.

Snow Adopted After the Tune of

Chin Yuan Chun

Mao Zedong

North country scene:

A hundred leagues locked in ice,

A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

Both sides of the Great Wall

One single white immensity.

The Yellow River’s swift current

Is stilled from end to end.

The mountains dance like silver snakes

And the highlands charge like wax-hued elephants,

Vying with heaven in stature.

On a fine day,the land,

Clad in white,adorned in red,

Grows more enchanting.

This land so rich in beauty

Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

But the monarches,such as

Qinshihuang and HanWudi

Were lacking in literary grace,

The emperors,like Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

Had little poetry in their souls;

That proud son of Heaven Genghis Khan,

Knew only shooting eagles with bow outstretched

All those are past and gone!

For truly great men

Look to this age alone.

惟馀莽莽;

略输文采;
