Introduction by Zhang Zhiyang

The Research of Charlie Jones Soongs Idea of Modern Education is the subtitle of this book. His educational idea is unique and cannot be duplicated. It would be wonderful if Charlie Jones Soongs “theory of modern education,” like contemporary science—“theory of depending on matrix”—could be truly duplicated and we were able to imitate continually the eminently successful families like the “Family of Charlie Jones Soong,” actualizing such a dream of his as the following: “[A]s far as one in a hundred children become a great talent, or a superman, China would have four million supermen, and one neednt worry about saving the nation. ”

The “superman” of Charlie Jones Soongs idealism is not, of course, the one of Nietzsches philosophy. Nowadays we are afraid that China, as in Charlie Jones Soongs observation, has already had “four million supermen,” and one can think that they are not supermen in accordance with “what Charlie Jones Soong said.” But in one sense they are “the combinative products cultivated by Chinese and Western education.”

As a matter of fact, it is true that “the western system is used in China,” not “the integration of Chinese and western education.” Though it seems we are sitting on the throne we actually engraft ourselves completely onto the Western “body,” transplanting the system into the soil of China for our use. This is a very peculiar form of growth, which is neither more nor less than the portraiture of Charlie Jones Soongs “theory of modern education.”

The reason they aspired after such an aim was to turn out “strong men” in order to make a “strong country.” “Power” is the kernel.

It is perhaps a pity that Charlie Jones Soong had never foreseen that the Chinese supermen brought up by so peculiar a form of growth didnt seem like “his” descendants who have developed in America, and that the engrafted supermen growing up in China are making Americans more and more uneasy. The most important reason for this falls on the keyword “power,” which means that “both success and failure were due to Xiao He.”
